Do YOU Procrastinate?
As I sit here thinking of how I use to postpone doing things, just not taking action that needed, and this was few years back, before I realized how it had affected my personal growth. I use to just put off things with no reason or to be precise I just was not realizing the reason for the same and over a period of time, before I could realize, I had formed a habit. This is called ‘Procrastination’
Once I started realizing and started taking corrective actions, I further realized how dangerous habit I had got in to. It was straight sabotaging my life. I started understanding that I was a victim of this habit and was not able to reach any of my goals or execute plans or missing on great opportunities only because of this habit called ‘Procrastination’
Hence, I decided that I share my experience and the simple steps that I took which helped me to get out of this dangerous habit. I believe that this sharing would help millions of people to learn from my experience. I am sure if you are reading this article, you are already on your way out of this habit in case if you have the same. This will provide you a great deal of understanding to root out any kind of reasoning or justifications that are leading you to Procrastination.
1. Perfection: I always had a desire and intention to have things done perfectly. And this us e to generate more of stress, anxiety and fear of failure within me. And also, undesirable behaviour of not accepting things that are supposed to be the way they are. What I did realize is, once a job is done, this can be revisited to find scope for improvement and improvement is the only change that is constant in life. It is very important to understand and accept that ‘nature itself is not perfect’ i.e. every activity that we perform has the scope for improvement and there is nothing in life that you can do a ‘perfect’ job which is the end of any scope for improvement.
2. Fear & Anxiety: Most of the time, I have realized that these two are driven due to the fact that there is a deep intention & desire to perform the job to perfection. However, what I realized over a period of time is to just starting the work without too much such intentions have given me the desired fruit. This I say because, once I started the activity / job to perform, I realized that in the process of performing, I felt less fear and stresses and did not find any reason to ‘Procrastinate’. And also, I developed believe that I am performing to my best and I have the scope to improve when I revisit the same i.e. I started lowering my expectations of my performance.
Note to be noted: Once you start sharing what you have been working on with your friends, family, peers &/or your superiors, you have made public of the intention and also by default derived the time frame to achieve the same. This will prompt you to be religious & continuous on the activity without lag time. And also, as you already know, to keep yourself highly motivated, you should always imagine i.e. visualize that you have already completed &/or achieved the desired activity to the minute details. This will give you a great deal of zeal to drive yourself to complete the task without ‘procrastination’.
3. Organizing: I also started notifying myself to be organized. I read somewhere that affirmations and self talk helps to get rid of unwanted habits. So, I started practicing the same. In other words, I started telling myself that – I am keeping my desk and work place well set to my comfort. I am jotting down all that I need to do to complete the task. I am prioritizing the tasks on hand. I am identifying the activities which are unproductive to ensure that I do not get stuck with such activities. Like this, self talks helped me to organizing my thought process. The result was a clearly & definite destination set for the day. This provided step by step accomplishments in a small way which boosted my confidence levels.
I am sure that when you note the above points and start taking actions as I have taken, within few days, you will start seeing the results as I have seen. So, the task to do as of now is to start visualizing that you have started toting these points and started acting without ‘procrastination’
For your success only!
God Bless You!
